Sizes S-XL (bust 30'' / 76cm - 52'' / 132cm)  This pattern is very flexible, and can easily fit sizes above and below this range.

Difficulty: Intermediate

The fabulously decadent Sophia Mantle is based on images and extant examples of fashionable mantles worn in the last quarter of the 18th century and the first decade of the 19th. It features a shorter back which ends approximately 4''/10cm below the waist, long front 'points' or lappets, a dramatic hood gathered in with pleating at the neck, and a tie fastening designed to close low on the bust.

View A features narrower, slightly shorter lappets.

View B features wider, longer lappets.

The capacious hood is big enough to fit over extravagant 1770s and 80s hairstyles. Wear it up, framing the face, or down, forming a collar that falls over the shoulders.

The Sophia is fully lined with an optional interlining. The pattern includes detailed instructions on trimming the mantle with faux fur, marabou feather, or self-fabric or purchased brush fringe trimming. The trim may be used only on the hood hem, neck, and lappet ends, or around the entire border of the mantle.

Like all Scroop + Virgil's Fine Goods patterns the Sophia Mantle pattern includes detailed user-friendly instructions on making the mantle using historical techniques.

The instructions use historically-accurate methods and are entirely hand-sewn.  It is possible to do some steps by machine, but no machine-sewing instructions are included.

Want more mantles?  The Sophia also comes in a combined pattern with our other 18th century mantle patterns, the Marie and Charlotte.  Get all three patterns for the price of two!  Click here to go to the combined pattern.

Recommended Fabrics:

Outer: silk taffeta and satin, figured silks, velvet and velveteen, fulled wools. Silks & velvets in black, ivory/white, and shades of pink and coral; and wools in black and red are the most common colors seen in extant examples and period images.

Lining: Light-midweight silks including silk satin, lightweight taffetas, and silk lustring/lutestring. The outer and lining may be the same fabric. Some images show mantles with contrasting linings: black or pink/coral mantles with white linings appear to have been most common.

Interlining (optional): cotton or wool flannel, very thin wool quilt batting. Polyester quilt batting is NOT recommended as it is too bulky.

The Models:

Leimomi is 5'7'' and a Size 38.  She is wearing View B in Size M in cream cotton/viscose velvet lined with microdot silk taffeta.
